    How does it work?

    HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container)

    HEIC has been the default photo format of iPhones and iPads since iOS 11 (“High Efficiency” option). Based on HEVC compression, it produces photos about half the size of JPG at equal quality. But Windows only opens it with extensions to install, Chrome and Firefox do not display it, and many websites reject HEIC files.

    JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

    JPG (or JPEG) has been the universal photo format since the 1990s. Its lossy compression greatly reduces the size of photos by discarding barely visible details. It does not support transparency and degrades slightly with every re-save. Every device, program and website can read it.

    HEIC or JPG: which format should you choose?

    Keep HEIC to store your photos on an iPhone, iPad or Mac: it takes up about half the space, which quickly matters as your photo library grows.

    Switch to JPG as soon as the photo has to leave the Apple ecosystem: sending it to a Windows PC, uploading it to an official website or a listings platform, ordering prints online, or emailing it to someone on Android. JPG is the only format you can be sure will be accepted everywhere.

    How does the conversion work?

    1. Drop your HEIC files in the area provided, choose them or paste an image: several files at once if you like.
    2. Adjust the options if needed: they apply to every file in the list, which are converted again automatically.
    3. Download each JPG file, or all of them at once in a ZIP archive.

    The conversion takes place in your browser. For your information:

    • The real format of each file is checked from its content, not its extension.
    • HEIC photos are decoded by libheif, a free library running in your browser (WebAssembly), downloaded only once with the first file.
    • JPG does not support transparency: transparent areas become white.
    • The photo’s orientation is applied: the converted image displays the right way up everywhere.

    Uploading apartment photos to a listings site

    You took 12 photos with your iPhone (about 2 MB each as HEIC), but the site only accepts JPG. Drop them all in and set the maximum size to 1,920 px: you get 12 JPGs of about 400 to 600 KB, downloaded as a single ZIP archive.

    Sending holiday photos to someone on Windows

    A 12-megapixel HEIC photo (4,032 × 3,024 px, 2.3 MB) becomes a JPG of the same resolution of about 3.5 MB at quality 85. Your recipient opens it directly, without installing any extension, and the GPS location has been removed.

    Frequently asked questions

    How do I open a HEIC photo on Windows?

    Windows 10 and 11 only read HEIC after installing the “HEIF” and “HEVC” extensions from the Microsoft Store (the latter is paid). The simplest option is to convert your photos to JPG: they then open in any image viewer.

    How do I make my iPhone take photos in JPG directly?

    In Settings › Camera › Formats, choose “Most Compatible”. New photos will be saved as JPG (and videos as H.264), at the cost of larger files. Photos you have already taken stay in HEIC.

    Does converting to JPG reduce quality?

    Very little at the default quality (85): the difference is invisible to the naked eye on a screen or a standard print. The JPG file is, however, larger than the original HEIC, because its compression is less efficient. Raise the quality to 95 for an archive, lower it towards 70 for an email.

    Can Live Photos be converted?

    Yes: the still image of the Live Photo is converted to JPG. The short animated clip, stored separately as a video file, is not affected.

    Are my HEIC files uploaded to a server?

    No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, on your device: your files are never uploaded, stored or viewed by anyone. You can check this in the “Network” tab of your browser’s developer tools: no file appears there. Metadata (GPS location, camera, date) is also removed from the converted file.
