    How does it work?

    WebP

    WebP, created by Google, was designed for the web. It offers lossy or lossless compression, transparency and animation, with files 25 to 35% smaller than a JPG of comparable quality. Every current browser reads it, but some older software (viewers, office programs, printing services) cannot open it yet.

    PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

    PNG is a lossless format: every pixel is kept exactly. It supports transparency, making it the reference for logos, screenshots, diagrams and images containing text. For photos, however, it produces large files. It can be read everywhere.

    WebP or PNG: which format should you choose?

    WebP is perfect for displaying light images on a website, transparency included.

    PNG is better suited to working on the image: editing, compositing, adding it to a presentation or to software that cannot open WebP. It keeps transparency and does not degrade with repeated saves, at the cost of larger files.

    How does the conversion work?

    1. Drop your WebP files in the area provided, choose them or paste an image: several files at once if you like.
    2. Adjust the options if needed: they apply to every file in the list, which are converted again automatically.
    3. Download each PNG file, or all of them at once in a ZIP archive.

    The conversion takes place in your browser. For your information:

    • The real format of each file is checked from its content, not its extension.
    • The photo’s orientation is applied: the converted image displays the right way up everywhere.

    Getting a transparent logo for a presentation

    A partner’s logo, found on their website, is a transparent 24 KB WebP. Converted to PNG, it weighs about 60 KB and sits on any slide background, with no white box around it.

    You need to annotate 6 WebP screenshots in software that only reads PNG. Converted losslessly, they keep perfectly sharp text; expect 200 to 500 KB per screenshot at 1,920 px wide.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is transparency kept?

    Yes. PNG handles transparency as well as WebP: transparent and semi-transparent areas are carried over exactly.

    Will the PNG be better quality than the WebP?

    It will be identical to the decoded WebP image, with no further loss. If the original WebP was lossy, details that have already disappeared cannot be recovered.

    Why is the PNG file larger?

    PNG compresses without removing anything, whereas WebP discards barely visible details. For a logo or a screenshot the difference stays moderate; for a photo, the PNG can be 5 to 10 times larger.

    Can I keep the image’s metadata?

    Yes, by ticking “Keep metadata”. By default it is removed to protect your privacy. Most WebP images from the web contain none anyway.

    Are my WebP files uploaded to a server?

    No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, on your device: your files are never uploaded, stored or viewed by anyone. You can check this in the “Network” tab of your browser’s developer tools: no file appears there. By default, metadata (GPS location, camera, date) is also removed from the converted file; you can choose to keep it.
