How does it work?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container)
HEIC has been the default photo format of iPhones and iPads since iOS 11 (“High Efficiency” option). Based on HEVC compression, it produces photos about half the size of JPG at equal quality. But Windows only opens it with extensions to install, Chrome and Firefox do not display it, and many websites reject HEIC files.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
PNG is a lossless format: every pixel is kept exactly. It supports transparency, making it the reference for logos, screenshots, diagrams and images containing text. For photos, however, it produces large files. It can be read everywhere.
HEIC or PNG: which format should you choose?
HEIC remains the best choice for keeping your photos on an Apple device: it is compact and of excellent quality.
Choose PNG when you need to edit the image or insert it into a document without adding any loss: every decoded pixel is kept as is, even after several saves. For simple sharing, JPG will be much lighter.
How does the conversion work?
- Drop your HEIC files in the area provided, choose them or paste an image: several files at once if you like.
- Adjust the options if needed: they apply to every file in the list, which are converted again automatically.
- Download each PNG file, or all of them at once in a ZIP archive.
The conversion takes place in your browser. For your information:
- The real format of each file is checked from its content, not its extension.
- HEIC photos are decoded by libheif, a free library running in your browser (WebAssembly), downloaded only once with the first file.
- The photo’s orientation is applied: the converted image displays the right way up everywhere.
Examples
Editing a photo in a drawing program
You want to cut out an object photographed with your iPhone in a program that cannot open HEIC. Converted to PNG, the 4,032 × 3,024 px photo keeps all its detail; expect about 10 to 15 MB for this lossless format.
Adding a snapshot to a presentation
A photo of a whiteboard taken in HEIC (1.8 MB) is converted to PNG with a maximum size of 1,920 px: about 3 MB, perfectly sharp text and no degradation if you crop it later.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the PNG file much larger than the HEIC?
PNG is a lossless format: it records every pixel exactly, whereas HEIC compresses the photo by removing invisible details. For a photo, a PNG is therefore often 5 to 10 times larger. That is the price of an image that will never degrade again.
Is the PNG better quality than the original HEIC?
No: the conversion cannot recreate details missing from the HEIC. It simply guarantees that no further loss is added, now or with later saves.
Can I reduce the size of the converted images?
Yes, with the “Maximum size” option: choose, for example, 1,920 px for a presentation or a document. The PNG file size drops sharply, proportions are kept and the image is never enlarged.
Do Portrait mode photos keep their background blur?
Yes, the blur as it appears in the Photos app is kept in the PNG. However, the depth map that lets you adjust that blur afterwards is not carried over: PNG cannot store it.
Are my HEIC files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, on your device: your files are never uploaded, stored or viewed by anyone. You can check this in the “Network” tab of your browser’s developer tools: no file appears there. Metadata (GPS location, camera, date) is also removed from the converted file.
