    How does it work?

    JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

    JPG (or JPEG) has been the universal photo format since the 1990s. Its lossy compression greatly reduces the size of photos by discarding barely visible details. It does not support transparency and degrades slightly with every re-save. Every device, program and website can read it.

    PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

    PNG is a lossless format: every pixel is kept exactly. It supports transparency, making it the reference for logos, screenshots, diagrams and images containing text. For photos, however, it produces large files. It can be read everywhere.

    JPG or PNG: which format should you choose?

    JPG is the most practical format for storing and sharing photos: small and readable everywhere.

    PNG makes sense when the image will be edited several times (every JPG re-save adds artifacts, PNG does not), when you want to add transparency, or when a program or form requires it. Expect a noticeably larger file.

    How does the conversion work?

    1. Drop your JPG files in the area provided, choose them or paste an image: several files at once if you like.
    2. Adjust the options if needed: they apply to every file in the list, which are converted again automatically.
    3. Download each PNG file, or all of them at once in a ZIP archive.

    The conversion takes place in your browser. For your information:

    • The real format of each file is checked from its content, not its extension.
    • The photo’s orientation is applied: the converted image displays the right way up everywhere.

    Preparing a photo for background removal

    You want to remove the background of a 1.1 MB JPG product photo (2,000 × 2,000 px). Converted to PNG (about 6 MB), it can be edited and saved as many times as needed, then given a transparent background.

    Meeting a form that requires PNG

    A platform asks for a PNG image of 1,280 px at most. Your 4,000 px JPG is converted with a maximum size of 1,280 px: the resulting PNG weighs about 1.5 MB and meets the requirement.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does converting to PNG improve the quality of my photo?

    No: details lost during JPG compression cannot be recreated. PNG only guarantees that no further loss will be added, even after many saves.

    Will the PNG have a transparent background?

    Not automatically: a JPG photo has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the original background. PNG does, however, let you add transparency afterwards in an image editor.

    Why is the PNG file 4 to 8 times larger?

    Because it keeps every pixel exactly, whereas JPG discards barely visible details. Use the “Maximum size” option to limit the file size if the image does not need its full resolution.

    Is the photo information (date, camera) kept?

    Only if you tick “Keep metadata”. By default it is removed, including the GPS location, to protect your privacy if you share the image.

    Are my JPG files uploaded to a server?

    No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, on your device: your files are never uploaded, stored or viewed by anyone. You can check this in the “Network” tab of your browser’s developer tools: no file appears there. By default, metadata (GPS location, camera, date) is also removed from the converted file; you can choose to keep it.
