    How does it work?

    AVIF (AV1 Image File Format)

    AVIF is based on AV1, a royalty-free video codec. It is currently the most efficient image format on the web: often half the size of a JPG at equal visual quality, with transparency and a wide color gamut. Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari (since iOS 16 and macOS Ventura) display it; many programs outside the browser cannot read it yet. It is slower to encode than other formats.

    PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

    PNG is a lossless format: every pixel is kept exactly. It supports transparency, making it the reference for logos, screenshots, diagrams and images containing text. For photos, however, it produces large files. It can be read everywhere.

    AVIF or PNG: which format should you choose?

    AVIF is built for display on the web: small, with transparency and wide colors.

    PNG is better for editing the image, placing it in a presentation or opening it in software that cannot read AVIF, especially if it has transparency. For a photo you simply want to share, JPG will be smaller.

    How does the conversion work?

    Using a transparent image in a mock-up

    An 80 KB cut-out AVIF image must go into a layout program that cannot read this format. Converted to PNG (about 900 KB), it keeps its transparent background.

    Annotating a screenshot

    A 1,440 × 900 px AVIF screenshot needs annotating in a drawing tool. The resulting PNG (about 450 KB) can be edited and re-saved losslessly at every step.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is the AVIF’s transparency kept?

    Yes, fully: PNG supports transparency, including semi-transparent areas.

    Are the very vivid (HDR) colors of my AVIF kept?

    The image is converted to the standard color space (sRGB) used by the vast majority of screens and software. An HDR or wide-color AVIF image may therefore look slightly less vivid as a PNG.

    Why is the PNG so large compared with the AVIF?

    AVIF is one of the most compressed formats in existence, whereas PNG keeps every pixel losslessly. A ratio of 1 to 10 is common for a photo.

    Can I reduce the image resolution?

    Yes, with the “Maximum size” option: the image is scaled down with its proportions kept, and never enlarged.

    Are my AVIF files uploaded to a server?

    No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, on your device: your files are never uploaded, stored or viewed by anyone. You can check this in the “Network” tab of your browser’s developer tools: no file appears there. Metadata (GPS location, camera, date) is also removed from the converted file.
