    How does it work?

    PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

    PNG is a lossless format: every pixel is kept exactly. It supports transparency, making it the reference for logos, screenshots, diagrams and images containing text. For photos, however, it produces large files. It can be read everywhere.

    AVIF (AV1 Image File Format)

    AVIF is based on AV1, a royalty-free video codec. It is currently the most efficient image format on the web: often half the size of a JPG at equal visual quality, with transparency and a wide color gamut. Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari (since iOS 16 and macOS Ventura) display it; many programs outside the browser cannot read it yet. It is slower to encode than other formats.

    PNG or AVIF: which format should you choose?

    PNG remains the reference format for editing transparent images and exchanging them with other software.

    AVIF is the most economical way to publish them on the web: transparency is kept and files are often 5 to 10 times smaller than PNG for rich photos or illustrations. For a simple icon or logo the gain is smaller: PNG or SVG may be enough.

    How does the conversion work?

    1. Drop your PNG files in the area provided, choose them or paste an image: several files at once if you like.
    2. Adjust the options if needed: they apply to every file in the list, which are converted again automatically.
    3. Download each AVIF file, or all of them at once in a ZIP archive.

    The conversion takes place in your browser. For your information:

    • The real format of each file is checked from its content, not its extension.
    • If your browser cannot create AVIF itself (Safari, for example), a free WebAssembly encoder takes over automatically.
    • The photo’s orientation is applied: the converted image displays the right way up everywhere.

    A cut-out product image, a 1,600 × 1,600 px PNG of 3.2 MB, becomes a transparent AVIF of about 150 KB at quality 60: −95%, with the transparent background intact.

    6 PNG illustrations weigh 9 MB in total. Converted to AVIF with a maximum size of 1,920 px, they fit in about 900 KB: the home page loads almost instantly.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is transparency kept in AVIF?

    Yes, AVIF supports a full transparency channel: soft edges and semi-transparent shadows are preserved.

    Do text and sharp outlines stay clean?

    At high quality (75 and above), yes. At low quality, flat areas stay clean but slight blur can appear on small text: in that case, raise the quality or keep the PNG.

    Can I use AVIF on WordPress?

    Yes, WordPress accepts AVIF images since version 6.5 (2024), as long as your host’s server can process them.

    Why is the conversion slower than WebP?

    AVIF encoding requires a lot of computation. It runs in your browser, in the background: the page stays usable during the conversion.

    Are my PNG files uploaded to a server?

    No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, on your device: your files are never uploaded, stored or viewed by anyone. You can check this in the “Network” tab of your browser’s developer tools: no file appears there. Metadata (GPS location, camera, date) is also removed from the converted file.
