How does it work?
ICO (Windows icon)
ICO is the format of Windows icons and of websites’ legacy favicon (favicon.ico). A single file contains several sizes of the same icon (16, 32, 48, 256 pixels…): the system picks the one best suited to the display. Each size can be stored as PNG, with transparency.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
PNG is a lossless format: every pixel is kept exactly. It supports transparency, making it the reference for logos, screenshots, diagrams and images containing text. For photos, however, it produces large files. It can be read everywhere.
ICO or PNG: which format should you choose?
ICO is only useful for Windows icons and websites’ legacy favicon.
PNG is the right format to reuse an icon’s image: insert it in a document, edit it, or declare it as a modern favicon. Transparency is kept and the file opens in any software.
How does the conversion work?

Recovering the logo of an old website

Frequently asked questions
Which image size is extracted from the ICO file?
The largest available and, at equal size, the one with the most colors. An ICO file often contains several versions of the same icon (from 16 to 256 pixels).
Are old Windows icons supported?
Yes: PNG icons as well as old bitmap formats (1, 4, 8, 24 and 32 bits, with their transparency mask) can be read.
Can I enlarge the icon?
The converter never enlarges images: enlarging a 48-pixel icon would make it blurry. If you need a larger size, look for the original logo as PNG or SVG.
How do I get a website’s favicon?
It is usually found at https://site/favicon.ico. Save it, then drop it here. Remember to respect the rights of the brand concerned.
Are my ICO files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, on your device: your files are never uploaded, stored or viewed by anyone. You can check this in the “Network” tab of your browser’s developer tools: no file appears there. Metadata (GPS location, camera, date) is also removed from the converted file.
