    How does it work?

    JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

    JPG (or JPEG) has been the universal photo format since the 1990s. Its lossy compression greatly reduces the size of photos by discarding barely visible details. It does not support transparency and degrades slightly with every re-save. Every device, program and website can read it.

    ICO (Windows icon)

    ICO is the format of Windows icons and of websites’ legacy favicon (favicon.ico). A single file contains several sizes of the same icon (16, 32, 48, 256 pixels…): the system picks the one best suited to the display. Each size can be stored as PNG, with transparency.

    JPG or ICO: which format should you choose?

    JPG suits a photo or image without transparency, but Windows does not recognize it as an icon.

    ICO is essential for a Windows icon or a website’s favicon.ico file. Since JPG has no transparency, the icon will have a solid background: if your logo exists as a transparent PNG, start from that instead.

    How does the conversion work?

    1. Drop your JPG files in the area provided, choose them or paste an image: several files at once if you like.
    2. Adjust the options if needed: they apply to every file in the list, which are converted again automatically.
    3. Download each ICO file, or all of them at once in a ZIP archive.

    The conversion takes place in your browser. For your information:

    • The real format of each file is checked from its content, not its extension.
    • Each size is computed from the original image. A non-square image is centered on a transparent background.
    • The photo’s orientation is applied: the converted image displays the right way up everywhere.

    A 3,000 × 3,000 px JPG family photo becomes a Windows folder icon with sizes 16, 32, 48 and 256 px. The ICO file weighs about 90 KB.

    Frequently asked questions

    Will my icon have a transparent background?

    No: JPG has no transparency, so the image’s background is kept. For a cut-out icon, start from a transparent PNG (PNG to ICO conversion).

    What if my photo is not square?

    It is scaled down to fit entirely within the icon’s square, and centered: transparent bands fill the remaining space. Crop it to a square beforehand for a better result.

    How do I apply the icon to a Windows folder?

    Right-click the folder › Properties › Customize › Change Icon › Browse, then select your ICO file.

    Will a detailed photo stay readable at 16 × 16 pixels?

    Rarely: at that size, only simple shapes and strong contrasts remain recognizable. For a favicon, prefer a clean design or an initial on a colored background.

    Are my JPG files uploaded to a server?

    No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, on your device: your files are never uploaded, stored or viewed by anyone. You can check this in the “Network” tab of your browser’s developer tools: no file appears there. Metadata (GPS location, camera, date) is also removed from the converted file.
