    How does it work?

    PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

    PNG is a lossless format: every pixel is kept exactly. It supports transparency, making it the reference for logos, screenshots, diagrams and images containing text. For photos, however, it produces large files. It can be read everywhere.

    WebP

    WebP, created by Google, was designed for the web. It offers lossy or lossless compression, transparency and animation, with files 25 to 35% smaller than a JPG of comparable quality. Every current browser reads it, but some older software (viewers, office programs, printing services) cannot open it yet.

    PNG or WebP: which format should you choose?

    PNG remains the working format of designers and the most compatible one for transparent images.

    Prefer WebP to publish those same images on the web: it keeps transparency while often making illustrations and photos 3 to 5 times smaller. For a very simple logo on the web, also consider SVG.

    How does the conversion work?

    1. Drop your PNG files in the area provided, choose them or paste an image: several files at once if you like.
    2. Adjust the options if needed: they apply to every file in the list, which are converted again automatically.
    3. Download each WebP file, or all of them at once in a ZIP archive.

    The conversion takes place in your browser. For your information:

    • The real format of each file is checked from its content, not its extension.
    • If your browser cannot create WebP itself (Safari, for example), a free WebAssembly encoder takes over automatically.
    • The photo’s orientation is applied: the converted image displays the right way up everywhere.

    Lightening an online store’s images

    Your 25 cut-out product photos (transparent PNGs of 2.4 MB, 1,500 × 1,500 px) become WebP files of about 180 KB at quality 80, transparency included: −92% across the whole catalog.

    Publishing an infographic

    A 1,200 × 4,000 px PNG infographic weighs 3.1 MB. As a quality 90 WebP it drops to about 600 KB and the text stays sharp: the page hosting it loads much faster.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is the PNG’s transparency kept?

    Yes, WebP supports transparency, including soft edges and semi-transparent shadows.

    What quality should I choose for a logo or screenshot?

    For an image with text or sharp outlines, choose a high quality (90 to 100) to avoid any blur along the edges. For a photo, 75 to 85 is enough.

    Will Photoshop open my WebP image?

    Yes, in recent versions of Photoshop, GIMP or Affinity. Some older or office programs cannot open it: keep your original PNGs for those uses.

    Is WebP suitable for emails?

    Not always: some email clients, including versions of Outlook, do not display WebP. For an image embedded in an email, PNG or JPG is safer.

    Are my PNG files uploaded to a server?

    No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, on your device: your files are never uploaded, stored or viewed by anyone. You can check this in the “Network” tab of your browser’s developer tools: no file appears there. By default, metadata (GPS location, camera, date) is also removed from the converted file; you can choose to keep it.
